What would Valentine's Day be like without an official JustNorman young lover's playlist? On this very day just one year before, I released my very first public mixtape, and so in honor of this sweet sweet holiday (and my day of birth), I've decided to compile an audio list of 14 of some of my favorite tracks that fit perfectly into this special occasion.

As you may remember from last year's Valentine's Day, I was somewhat pessimistic about the day to come. Not only did I not have any plans considering it was my birthday (wait, have I told you that tomorrow's
my birthday?), but I also didn't have anyone to spend it with, so needless to say I was pretty bummed out. Luckily, things seem to of taken a turn for the better, and for the first time in who knows how long, I'll actually have someone. A real someone. And for this, I'm forever thankful.

I know we've only been dating for like three weeks, but she deserves a mixtape crafted in her honor, so shoutouts to Rachelle for being the lovely face for this playlist, and for being the trillest girl I know.

Echoes of Silence Mixtape Review

 On behalf of Justnorman.blogspot.com, and all of its affiliate tumblrs, twitterers, and inner city street teams, I'd like to personally welcome you to 2012 AD. *Cues Bone Thugs-N-Harmony 1st of tha Month*

In honor of this fresh start, I figured what better way to ring in the new year than with an album review? As you may have guessed at this point in your following, I prefer to only associate myself with the best of the best, especially when it comes to music. As a BIG fan of The Weeknd, I absolutely refuse to allow for another day to go by without reviewing at least one of his mixtapes. I mean, all he did was change my entire outlook on both life and R&B, no big deal. Since I couldn't do this one alone, I sought the assistance of two of my very few favorite bloggers, Trent (TrentTrizzy) and Havean (HolaHavito) so without further ado. . Legggo.

Ohh but wait a second. Before we begin, if you DON'T know who The Weekend is at this point, you should probably just quit at life, or just click HERE before you even begin reading. Things might make a little more sense if you've actually listened to the music of the man that we're referring to. Okay, let's try this again.

What a way to start the end of a mixtape trilogy. The Weeknd’s cover of Michael Jackson’s single, Dirty Diana, is better than the original. I said it; I am prepared for legions of people transfixed on the past to murder me and moonwalk away silently. I’m sacrificing my well-being in order to illustrate what The Weeknd is trying to prove by covering this song: He is here to stay and he’s damned talented.

Montreal 

Montreal is a mid tempo song in which The Weeknd “borrows” lyrics from the French song “Laisse Tomber Les Filles” by France Gall. The lyrics essentially translate to a player’s warning, “stop being a playboy, one day you’ll be the one played and you’ll be hurt.” That is the gist of the track, the narrator is heartbroken, but he’s too prideful and hurt to admit it. The tempo and the background vocals are sensual and evanescent, and are a throwback to early 90’s R&B. Picture The Weeknd in ’93 and the music video for Montreal; a brick filled loft filled with artificial smoke, a sexy girl swirling provocatively in white linen, The Weeknd singing and dancing with a clean high top fade.

Outside

Sex: The Weeknd’s second favorite topic after drugs, of any kind. Though the song is good, lyrically it’s missing the originality and tongue in cheek lyrics that accompanied songs like “Loft Music, The Zone, and The Knowing.” However, as usual the beat itself helps carry The Weeknd when he falls short lyrically from time to time. The bells and dissonant snare drums are hypnotic and trance like, and aid the storytelling of sex that is so good it puts one under a spell.

XO/The Host 

The same way that rappers like Young Jeezy, Pusha T, and Rick Ross find new ways to talk about the same white powdery substance, Able Tesfaye, better known by his stage name The Weeknd, continues to seduce our earbuds with tales of marijuana days and cocaine nights. “XO/The Host” is a beautifully narrated tragedy that tells the story of a young girl addicted to the party life. With lines like “specially when your nose red from that K/ Special Diet Coke/ You need more bread/ Now you got no rent/ You blow that money.” The Weeknd does what he’s best at; Painting pictures of tragic lifestyles that make you want to live them out, even if the outcome isn’t a good one. “The Host” serves as a prelude to “Initiation,” in which Able tells our damsel that she must pass a “test” to get his love. This was a good smooth interlude to get us ready for the craziness that’s ahead.

Initiation

 This track is hands down the best song on the album in my opinion. Everything about this song, from the eerie instrumental that lurks over the slurred and sporadic pitch of the verses, to lyrics such as, “Roll that weed, blow the fire out/ Taste that lean when you kiss my mouth/ Get so wet when I eat you out” is what attracts people to The Weeknd’s music. He possesses the unique ability to croon the phrases and brash descriptions commonly found in rap music without the slightest hesitation. Women feel sexy singing it, and men still feel at home while listening to it.  Win Win.

Same Old Song 

This song could’ve easily been titled “Shot for Me pt 2." Here we find Able reflecting with a woman about how she left him when he needed her most, and now that he’s big, she’s coming around again. We’ve heard this story again and a again, and as much as I appreciate the lyrics and the overall message of this song, the emphasized belting of the hook eventually gets to be a bit much for my ears. Not one of my favorites, but still a decent song.

The Fall

As we head towards the end of the mixtape, we see that thing are beginning to slow down drastically as the story progresses. The track reveals itself to be extremely deep, dark, and ominous, which is a common theme for The Weeknd. When listened to on a pair of over-the-ear headphones, the song seems to give off a surround sound effect as if one were being whispered to by a swarm of meth heads at four in the morning. I thought it to be a pretty decent track, but to go along with what Havean has stated previously, it seems to fall short lyrical, but is carried along into the "ohh that's my jam" category due to the oustanding production.

Next

Next is quite possibly one of my least favorite tracks of the mixtape. I've never been a big fan of the whole gloomy, orchestral piano ballad thing, and despite the fact it's The Weeknd who's singing these lyrics, I still don't think I'll ever be able to appreciate it fully. As usual with this guy, I continue to listen to the entire six minutes due to that wonderfully uncanny voice of his, even after I reach the conclusion that I'm almost completely annoyed by the whole idea of the production. In the end, it was a song that I could probably due without, but he needed nine tracks so. . well, I guess that's that.

Echoes of Silence

While I wasn't much of a fan of this track either (sorry for bringing down the vibe), it seems to tie in well with the overarching theme of the entire mixtape. Drugs, parties, and the potential for greatness seems to draw the attention of a variety of curious women. While our main protagonist attempts to tell them (or her) that he is offering nothing more than the superficial, they have no choice but to either oblige, or to end up alone, but due to the nature of the situation at hand, they choose both.

Overall  I thought this to be was a fairly decent mixtape, and while it wasn't my  favorite (House of Ballons for the win), I feel as if it was a nice way  to wrap up a series of releases that has recently propelled him to the  very top of underground stardom. While The Weeknd still has much more  maturing to do before he's able to fully compete with the higher ends of the music world, there is no doubt in my mind that Abel Tesfaye is soon to be in the very forefront of both our minds, and the R&B game as a whole.

Punxmas 2011

Winter break is finally here, and what a better way to start it off than with Houston's 7th annual Punxmas Fest. I know it may not seem as such, but Norman and punk music have quite the history with one another. Way back when in my band geek days, I went through a fairly heavy ska-punk-psychobilly phase, which has consequently had a major effect upon the types of music that I listen to today. While I may not fancy listening to The Casualties or GBH as much as I used to, I still can't seem to escape from the thrills of a good show, reminding me of all those things I've been missing while I've been away at school.

The show kicked off around five or so featuring around eleven bands in total, but the ones in particular that more or less so caught my attention played much later on the set list, so on time was definitely not mandatory. Now I don't know if I've ever really mention them by name before, but Kelin and Garret, aka my white friends, aka white boy mob, were the two dudes that I went with, and just for future reference, if you ever hear me speaking about a show, these two guys are more than likely the individuals that I rode with. But they weren't the only ones who came with me, oh no, there were more. Not only did I get to see a few old band mates from high school, Rachelle and Raveen took a few hours out of their "busy" schedule to come chill with your boy, and for that they deserve both the blue link and the mention (V TEVM SVLUTE).

As usual with these types of functions, I had a trill ass time, despite the fact that Devin and I decided to part ways a few weeks back (slipped that in there real classy like didn't I?). I know it seems like we just got together, but I guess it just wasn't meant to be, so maybe it's best that we just leave it at that for today. On a lighter note, my afro and my mustache is lookin' mad thick these days, and I've even caught the attention of one of the baddest black hipster girls on campus, so hey, I'm doing all right. *proceeds to pop multiple collars*

Wait, I'm Not Finished Yet

Despite that fact that its been nearly two months since my previous post, I am here to say that justnorman.blogspot.com is most definitely not gone for good. As if my readership wasn't already dwindling down to a halt due to my lack of posting, I'm sure a many of you have already given up on me, but if you're still here and you're actually reading this: thank you. I've been going through a lot lately and I know that that's not much of an excuse, but this is real life and sometimes we have to make sacrifices, and I guess the good ol' blogspot took the L on this one. I even let the tumblr start to fall a bit too, and once you start slackin' on tumblr, it's pretty much a downhill roller coaster from then on out.

Let us play catch up...

I know it might not necessariy seem like it to the outside world, but I'd have to say that the sacrifice was slightly necessary. These last few months I've been interning for an organization on campus know as The Exceptional Men of the Talented Tenth. The process has been going on since September or so, but to make a long story short, I, Norman Clark, am officially a member (TENTH TENTH, HOORAY). Out of the original 16 members who began the process, only 7 of us made it, and honestly, it was worth it.

Everything's starting to look up for me which is a nice change of pace. The girl that I've been "talking" to for a little over a year and half finally came around and made it Facebook official with a young pimp. I know I've never really spoken about her, but I usually prefer to keep things under wraps, especially on the internet, but fuck it, we're legit now (her name's Devin by the way). Also, I have friends. YES, REAL LIFE COLLEGE FRIENDS. Ever since Emilio and Christiana left me hangin' Freshman year, I've been on the hunt for some young souls to fill the spot that they left in my heart. Well guys, the wait is over and Δ TEΔM (A TEAM) is in full effect.

Now, I don't mean to be such a buzz kill, but I was to some degree slightly lonely before all of this happened. The way is see it is that there's a very thin line between solo dolo and lonely, and I was harking on the latter. Things are just changing so quickly and I'm just hoping that nothing goes wrong, God willing.

Tommy Ton Street Style: Fall 2011

I know, I know, it's been like a month since my last post, and I have a feeling that this might just end up being my own personal world record. If it's any consolation I've been really busy as of late, so the only thing I can really hope for is that the Dream(tape) I created was dope enough to solidify your belief in me (so basically you're not going anywhere).

By now I'm sure that most of you know that I live and die for a Tommy Ton seasonal blog post, and this occasion is no different. It didn't take long for me to realize that I had neither the time nor the desire to keep up with every model, designer, and lookbook that cat-walked across my web browser, so as you can guess, street style started to become my main concern. There's just something about seeing how others wear their own clothes in real life that interest me. One can purchase every label and designer accessory in the world, but if you don't know how to wake up in the morning and put it all together without any help from your onslaught of stylist and fashion hipsters then what's your point in life? Naturality is key here, and I think that's why I've become slightly fascinated with it all.

You might not exactly be able to tell considering as to how I rarely update my FLICKR page, but one of my favorite things to do is take pictures. I like to capture the moment, the intimacy, that smile when no one's looking, that glare as if you haven't got a care in the world... I love that. Posed photography is cool and all, but candid is where it's at. ALL DAY. ERR DAY.

Dream(tape)

I sat there in astonishment not knowing exactly what I needed to do with myself. I was happy, I was depressed, I was indifferent... every emotion imaginable seemed to of hit me at the exact same time, and it was at this moment that I realized that it was a movie that was making me feel this way. Me, the original alpha male, sitting there alone on the verge of a legitimate breakdown, crying my metaphorical eyes out because of something I'm watching on the fifteen inch screen of my laptop? Yes bro, that just happened, and even though it stings the ego having to recount this story via symbols and keystrokes, I'd much rather it be told over the internet as opposed to someone watching me have an emotional collapse (as if I needed anymore of those).

The movie in question was in fact a foreign film released not too long ago, conveniently entitled the Science of Sleep (I'll explain the significance in just a second). The feature recounts the story of a man who lives vicariously through his dream state while occasionally combining the realms of sleep and reality, even going as far as to mistake one for the other and vice versa. Eventually a female enters the picture and things seem to take a turn for the better... and then the worst, and then better, and then, well you get what I'm getting at. Things become complicated, and as he traversed between worlds I realized something with the soundtrack: it was perfect. Each song played was directly congruent to the lead characters' emotional state, allowing for the film to be seen as that much more real, that much more honest, that much more satisfying, and I found this to be beautiful.

After I got done wiping away my tears (both literal and metaphorical), I decided to do a bit of research in order to determine whether or not music has the capability to dictate the scenarios of our unconscious mind, and lo and behold, there does seem to be some fact to this. After acknowledging this tid bit of information, I decided to embark upon my very own dream journey by compiling the perfect playlist for the unconscious mind, so I hope you've got your ipods ready. 

The download is dissected into two different files: the standard itunes ready track by track mixtape, and for the die hard unconscious dreamers, an hour long, uninterrupted audio file, ready for repeated playback as you drift off into your dream state.

And The School Year Begins (Again)

Is it just me, or does time seem to be flying by entirely too quickly? I wish it'd slow down at least just a little bit, I feel like I'm missing way too much around me and I'd rather not forget it all. There's just so many memories I'd like to keep but there's no more room. My mental space is filling up too quickly I think, I should probably just go ahead and stop being so nostalgic and make room for more, but why? I like the ones I have already, why can't I just keep them all? Tough luck I suppose, but enough with the metaphors, we've got bidness to take care of.

Today marked the first day of the beginning of the school year, and unlike most of the kids my age, I was kind of excited. I laid out my clothes, phoned moms the night before, listened to some hype music... my social life/study habits are about to be on top this year (or at least that's what I keep telling myself). I've only been to two out of my five classes, and everything seems to be okay, but lets not speak too soon, again, it is only day one.

I'm guessing this'd be a good a time as any to humbly apologize for my hiatus, and to offically wave good bye to the summer behind us. It's been real though has it not? Our love affair was wonderful, but school's started baby and Autumn keeps calling my name. Don't worry, I'll be back next year. [End scene]

Audible Inventory

Sometimes it seems as if no matter what I'm doing, I always end of finding myself thinking about music. New music, old music, mainstream, completely unheard of...all of it. It's a mystery to me that I'm even able to concentrate on the simplest of task without having the urge to open up a new tab and listen to so and so's unofficial, unreleased greatest hits playlist. Speaking of tabs, I'm pretty sure I have at least 47 open right now, one of them being the almighty, untouchable, unconquerable itunes collection (yes all of that was necessary, and yes you can't compete).

Second to my education and my unborn child (chill, no one's pregnant) my choice in music and private assembly of entire albums and accompanying artwork, is something that I'm seemingly proud of, regardless of whether everyone else chooses to agree or not. For me, music is one of those things where everyone gets free rain. No one should be able to make you feel bad for listening to this or nodding your head that. You choose what you want to hear, you can't help what you like right?

In layman's term, I like to diversify and listen to a lot of different stuff, and as you might of guessed, my metaphorical plate is filled to the max with loads of varying metaphorical foods. As of right now there are about a dozen plus albums that I have yet to give a full listen to, so I figured, "hey, sharing is caring, put it on da blog."

The Kid Cudi Experience

It was all just a week ago... I, Justnorman, after years and years of admiration and the occasional laps of momentary astonishment, was finally given the opportunity to bask in the greatness of what is know as The Kid Cudi Experience. Now if anyone is familiar with me, and my taste in music (as by now I'm sure you are), you'll understand that my ears, along with the rest of my auditory system, have very quaint and particular desires in what they like to hear on a regular basis. At times I can come off as a bit pretentious and overly high brow, but if I may say, my itunes collection does however possess the occasional left fielder (Waka Flocka, Gucci Mane, Based God, need I go on?). While what I just stated has almost nothing to do with the topic at hand, my point is that I love music, and if I was unfortunately chosen to choose one man as the #1 rager of all time, Mr. Rager himself would without a doubt be the only man on that list.

The event took place on July 19th, Houston Texas, Reliant Arena. The previous 24 hours were fairly intense for me considering my inability to sleep, eat and control my sweat glands. Luckily enough I was able to arrive at the venue in one piece, "solo dolo" as usual. I was incredibly excited, and as if things couldn't get any better, I was graced with the presence of a lady friend I knew from way back, and as it turns out she was alone as well (swag). We waited in line in anticipation of what was to come, and soon enough there we were, moments away from witnessing one of the greatest shows I was ever to see in my twenty years of existence.

The experience opens up with a Chip tha Ripper set, who I am unfortunately somewhat unfamiliar with, but just enough so that I was able to swag out like it was nobody's business. After an hour or so it was time, time for him, time for him to grace us with his presence, grace us with his greatness. Is it...is that...yes inner female teenager, that, is Kid Cudi. For the next hour and a half or so, the crowd and I raged like there was no such thing as tomorrow. I mean how could you not? Chip was there, Cudi was there and even Cage made an appearance (epic). I don't mean to come off as cliche and star struck, but there were a few moments where I actually thought I was about to cry, it got that real. It's weird how you can feel so connected with someone you've never met before, but I guess that was the whole point right?

The girl I was with actually ended up blacking out for just a second, so I might of missed a song or two taking care of the lady, but that's neither here nor there. Despite the three previous paragraphs crafted before this, words can't explain how great of a time I had that night, and even though I have absolutely no high def photographs to show for it (box office LIED and told me cameras weren't allowed) I had an insane time, and if luck strikes me right, I'll never be able to forget it. Rage on Mr. Rager... Rage on.

The Blow x Love Inks

If it weren't for music, I don't think I'd be able to make it through the rest of this summer. To continue on with the previous post, it's still hot in Houston and I still don't feel like going outside while the sun's out, but what can I say, gotta live it up while we can right? This previous weekend I attended The Blow x Love Inks show, and in case you're wondering, yes it was worth the money. Now to most, twelve bucks may seem like chump change, worthless, insignificant, but to me, twelve dollars seems like so much more than that. Now I don't mean to sound like such a bum or a penny pincher (which I am), but when you don't have a job and paying for school requires you to sign your life away on a government endorsed payment plan, you start to realize that money actually matters, regardless of how often you tell yourself that it doesn't.

OBVIOUSLY, I get off task way too easily, but I think you get what I was attempting to get at. Long story short, I had a great time at the show, and both artist did a bang up job. As usual, all photographs were taken by yours truly, and if after listening to a few songs you find yourself sincerely interested, go a step further visit both groups HERE and HERE.

RAGE RAGE RAGE RAGE

Too Hot, and I'm Not Talking About Myself. Image Dump

*Looks down at weather channel app* Today? High 97. Tomorrow? High 97. Next day? Well I think you're beginning to get the pattern. It's just too hot to walk, too hot to blog, too hot to do anything, and cold, filtered canteen water just isn't cutting it. Not only is the rest of the coming weeks about to be blistering hot, I have a feeling that it's going to be this way for the next three to five months
(go figure). I'm usually not one to complain about the weather considering that I'm the first one to take my shirt off the moment the temperature reaches anything above 76, but come on, highs way north of 90, people dying on their way to work and no beach located within a 20 minute vicinity? This is just complete foolishness and I don't think I can stand for it any longer.

On a lighter note, we have air conditioning and I've got ample amounts of bad television and foreign novels to keep me company, so no worries. I'm still on the job hunt, and by that I mean I've pretty much lost all hope. In a perfect world I'd be making cash flow blogging or at the very least writing for someone else, but I'm sure we all know how difficult that can be. Damn how hard life is, why must it be that way though?

Well for now I guess that's just the way it is, unless I start making some income, then of course you'll definitely be "in the know" at that point. For now I'll just supply you guys and gals with a quaint selection of my favorite gifs and images, a few of which can be seen gracing the web-space of my TUMBLR page. Summer Summer. The Warm Weather Mixtape

So the last time we spoke, I told you that I had a bit of a surprise that was supposed to be posted no later than Wednesday of last week. Well obviously, as usual with my blogging schedule, I'm a bit late on the delivery, but I'm here, so please don't be too upset. I try my best not to make these mixtapes of mine too frequent, but you have absolutely no idea how excited I get about hearing certain songs, or whenever I'm asked that age old question: "so, what kind of music do you like?" They're just so much fun to do, and I love just finding new stuff and "putting people on" if you will, so it's a win win.

I really do have to ask you guys to be careful with this one though, 'cause I'm pretty sure I OD'd on swag like four times while assembling this track list (it's that potent). Twin Sister x Yong Mammals

As of this very instant, we, meaning I, have been on summer break for approximately 28 days 14 hours 2 minutes and 37 seconds, and as if you couldn't tell by my obnoxious desire to count the moments past since the arrival into my Houston apartment building, not too much has happened these past few weeks. Of course I've had the occasional outing, bonding time with moms and other such friends and family members, and from time to time the sporadic bike ride that usually ends in me slowly dying in the back of a Starbucks restroom, hoping and praying that the air conditioner never kicks off. I spend most of my days cooking and cleaning, as most of my stay at home mother friends do (what?), and making meager attempts at finishing this book I've been trying to read for who knows how long. As many kids my age with prior work history, I thought I'd have a job lined up before I even got here, spoke to the boss and everything, but at the looks of it, I just might not be working this summer (fingers still crossed). It'd be nice if there were more employers willing to hire me, regardless of my inability to work for more than 10 weeks, but I guess that's just the way life goes... Damn.

HOWEVER, according to last night, things are beginning to look up, as I've kicked off my series of yo-son-it's-a-bunch-of-bands-playing-lets-go-see-dem list with quite the bang if I may say so. TWIN SISTER, along with YOUNG MAMMALS and another band that I can't quite recall the name of were in attendance, and boy am I glad that I didn't stay at home to watch Bad Girls Club reruns. The show was great, the lighting was perfect and every girl in the spot looked like Alexa Chung and that one girl who's the lead singer for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. As usual I was one of four black kids there and it seems as if we all naturally gravitated towards one another (we low key stick together). My only problems were that the the downstairs stage was too small for the crowd that showed up, and my major concern being that I didn't get the chance to spit game at the lead singer. I think she smiled at me, and I'm pretty sure we made love with our eye contact, but I can't quite recall so that's my story and I'm sticking to it. All in all it was a great show, and despite my rambling on for an entire two paragraphs without even mentioning the genres of music or if it's even worth spending your hard earned money on (which I do in fact believe it is), I'll just let the audio and the photographs speak for themselves.

Remix Remix Eight: Kreayshawn

Truth be told, I was debating whether or not I was going to use Kreayshawn as a legitimate "post topic," but it seems as if the entire blogosphere is putting in their own two cents, so who am I to not want to be included in all the hub bub. If you spend as much time on the internet as I do, then I'm quite sure that all of your favorite blogs, tumblrs, twitters and hypebeast-esque lifestyle sites have been filled to the brim with information (or the lack thereof) on Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj's love child. Kreayshawn seems to of created a rather large buzz for herself as of late, no doubt caused by the introduction of her feature track, Gucci Gucci.

I'll have to admit, the song in itself is extremely catchy, and even long after analyzing the track I could still be found condemning high luxury, swagging heavy, and commenting on how many bad bitches I have in my very large room. God I love what music does to me. Unfortunately, I took it upon myself to go a step further and actually give ear to some of her other, lesser know, audio goodies, and was (as somewhat expected), thoroughly unimpressed. Considering that this is only the beginning, I can't quite forgo Kreayshawn as a whole just yet. I mean, I am a fan of Lil B, so who am I to criticize a girl for a lack of flow and or lyrical content on a particular track (BASED WORLD). Speaking of Lil B, and Odd Future Wolf Gang for that matter, Shawn in know for rubbing shoulders with some of Cali's finest underground hip-hop acts so who knows, maybe it's her time to breakthrough.

Anyhow, the track is addicting and I love it, so please formulate your own opinions and be sure to let me know how you feel about said white girl.

Oh but we're not done yet, we musn't forget the remix, which in my opinion makes White Girl Mob's lyrical head hunter that much more palatable.(remix courtsey of K.Flay)

As if you couldn't tell from my previous post, I am a ride or die fan for WarbyParker eyewear. Regardless of the fact that I only own one pair (I'm not made out of diamonds) I've been hooked from day one, and it seems as if it's the combination of low price-high quality frames and their wholehearted belief in bettering our communities that keeps me unquestionably captivated by their business model.
Just recently they partnered up with VisionSpring in order to provide both eyewear and entrepreneurial opportunities for women living in low income countries. Now I don't know about you, but as far as I'm concerned there aren't very many businesses that I can list who's goal is to both make profit AND change the world for the better, and I appreciate that.

Trip Downtown: Museum of Fine Arts

Work won't start for hopefully another few days and I've been out for summer break for about a week and a half, so as you can guess, I've got loads of free time on my hands. Legally, I'm not quite old enough to partake in Thirsty Thursdays, however, I'm more than happy to participate in free admission to The Museum of Fine Arts (Houston of course). I don't think I've set foot into a state funded gallery since I was a child, and since I love to make myself seem way more intellectual than I actually am, I figured this'd be a good a time as any to actually turn myself into that cultured young soul that I strive to be (aN pLu$, d@ gUrLz luV 1+).

Honestly, I wish you were there to see some of these paintings, because I don't think any camera is capable of doing any of these depictions justice. To be able to see the brushstrokes and the color of the paint as it ages due to time is just mind boggling, and to see the size, and how massive some of the works ended up being in real life is just...intense. There were a few times that I actually ended up getting "reprimanded," and I even snagged a few shot of some works that I wasn't supposed to (PRIVATE COLLECTIONS), but it's all in the name of art right? Ironic enough, the final time I get caught doing something I'm not supposed to be doing, just so happens to be the one time a picture is taken with me in the frame and I have no clue what the title of the painting is, it's my favorite. If anyone has any idea, feel free to let me know, I'm dying over here.

Finals Week: Image Dump

Monday, today, was probably one of my more stressful days of finals week, so now I've already been beginning to relax a bit, but still, priorities. must. focus. on. priorities. must... lecture notes... powerpoints... Yeah, that's a no. My mind is already on summer mode and I can barely fathom walking into a computer lab, let alone pull an all nighter memorizing list of political subsidies.

 In general, I'm just too done with Huntsville. I mean, I love my school, and I really do enjoy being with [some of] the people here, but damn broseph, why do most, if not all of my ride or dies choose to attend universities on the opposite ends of the cosmos? I just don't understand why they choose to be so far away from me. It makes me sad... On a more positive note, this summer shall be an epic one. I'm not even out of school yet and I'm already getting hit up to go do fun stuff with the bros [and the ladies as well]. This rarely happens, I'm excited, and if you're one of the people that I plan on spending my time with, then IT IS ABOUT TO GO DOWN.

Also, as you can see, the fro is doing well. I decided to give the whole side part thing a go and so far things are going fairly well. Swag.

James Vincent McMorrow

Few times have I heard a voice so sincere that it actually stops me in my tracks and forces me to listen to whatever the hell it is that they're trying to tell me, and this, actually happend a few weeks ago. As usual, I'm doing my daily internet crawl, browsing through dozens of new records and artist, attempting to sift the miracles from the mundane and there was it was, the opening record to his debut album, and also the moment that I gently cried into the arms of my pillow and comforter [it was just...beautiful].

If I had to pigeon hole Mr. McMorrow in comparison to other musicians, I'd go ahead and say he's a mixture between James Blake, Mumford & Sons and I've even heard Bon Iver thrown in a few times. He's definitely got that hardcore indie/folk singer vibe going on but also makes use of more traditional instruments such as the banjo and sliding guitar. I seem to enjoy most of the songs included on the record, and honestly I can't wait till August 'cause the is going to be the PERFECT autumn album. I've compiled a list of some of my favorite songs from the album so please enjoy if you're in the mood.

The weather has officially changed

And I unfortunately don't think that I'm quite ready for the onslaught of heat and humidity. Judging by the last few weeks of Texas temperature, I've had reason to believe that perhaps the coming summer won't be such a warm one, but sadly, YOUR BOY WAS AND IS MISTAKEN. It seems as if Huntsville has decided to pull a total 180, forcing me to wear nothing but canvas sneakers, hipster cutoffs, and lightweight dress shirts completely unbuttoned, abs tight and chains gleaming [swag]. As much as I love summer, I'm beginning to miss donning my all time favorite wool hat/trucker jacket combo, but I guess I'll just have to keep it moving and hope to God that I won't get any darker due to all the running I'll be doing [it is hella warm outside]. On that note, allow us to reminisce on our former winter glory. Hot babes, fur coats, herringbone and all.

Remix Remix Seven

And this time it comes from the heart. I've been a pretty big fan of Darwin Deez for a while now and I even had the opportunity to go see there show in Houston, but just like my life, something tragic happened and I just wasn't able to make it [damn.] Regardless of my ruined opportunities, I'm still able to live vicariously through the music, so I guess there's some since of positive within it all.
I've spoken to a few of my friends about there opinions of Mr. Deez, and as somewhat expected, many of them didn't seem to be too excited about it all that much. They felt as if he was a bit too indie, too hipster, just too much of "all of that," [or whatever that means] but to me, I actually kind of like it. Yeah the lyrics and melodies can be somewhat simple or even childish [that's a stretch] but simplicity is often times what catches my attention the most and I enjoy it. I actually really dig the album, and like most of the artist I speak of, I'll definitely continue to listen and keep them on my radar for forever and beyond.

As you'll soon see, I've still been going pretty hardcore for all my 80s synth vibe remixes and musicians and of course, nothing has changed. Besides the lyrics, the remix seems to be the other supporting factor as to why I'm still able to listen to this song over and over.

It's been almost two weeks since my last post....WEAKSAUCE, what am I on vacation? No, I've just been lazy, that's all. As much as I'd like to say that I've been spending this entire time running game on some literature and math equations, I unfortunately am unable to do so, shoot me. If it's any consolation I have been a little bit swamped lately, nothing too gnarly or specific, just your run of the mill onslaught of school, women and your classic case of dorm room boredom.

Spring Break Recap + The Niceguys x Blu x J Davey

To keep a long story short, my spring break as a whole was pretty decent. Regardless of Toro y Moi CANCELING their Houston show, and my inability to attend SWSW, I was still able to see a number of other groups play, pass the time with family and friends, and finally get that phone upgrade I've been waiting on
[long over due]. It seems like the time passed by so quickly and now, unfortunately, I have to get back to real life. I have two test to study for for Wednesday, and I don't even want to think about those essays. I guess I can officially welcome myself back to the daily grind. I'm a bit tired to go into the details, so: The Niceguys x Blu x J Davey. I feel like an ass because there where a gang of other artist who showed up and played that good music, but I unfortunately can't recall their names or where to find them. My apologies. May I now live in memories.

Fro Update: I can't quite recall if I mentioned it, but I decided to grow my hair out sometime in December. I'm not looking to do anything in particular to it, besides being awesome, so I'm just going to let it grow and let it be for now. Swag.

Also, I've decided to transform my old-semi-brand-new tracks shoes into actual day sneakers. I came home and decided that I was going to use them as strictly running shoes but then I came to the conclusion that I can actually stunt in these. We'll see how it goes.

Okay last thing. My mother says that I never give her any face time on my blog so now, mom, call all your girlfriends 'cause you are now officially swaged out/internet famous. I think Lil B needs to christen her as THE based goddess [she's not going to have a clue what I'm talking about].

Spring break has finally started and honesty, I NEEDED IT. I've been quite uninspired and fed up lately so hopefully this week off can provide me with the much needed revamping that is required to keep my mind and I up and running. In a perfect world I'd be driving over to Austin for SXSW with a pocket full a money and a couple dimes to keep me company, but unfortunately, I am not. Those ticket prices are INSANE, and I have a feeling it'll be quite some time before I'll ever be able to afford that 600 dollar price tag. There is however an adequate alternative. It's seems as if a number of the bands/rappers that I'm into'll be stopping in Houston a few days before the festival, so thankfully I won't be missing out too much. Tomorrow night is Toro y Moi and as you know, if you've been reading lately, I am definitely a ride or die fan. Speaking of, I think I need to go listen to the album a few more times so I can have all the lyrics memorized [I keeps it real around here].

Remix Remix Six

I tend to shy away from using Friday's as "post days" but I feel as though I've been neglecting lately so please allow me to try and make up for it. A while back, you may recall my previous post on Toro y Moi, professing my sudden love and infatuation with everything he and chillwave. Oddly enough, it wasn't/isn't just a passing moment, I'm actually really into his music. Today's REMIX REMIX may actually be quite familiar those who downloaded and enjoyed my Valentine's day, From Laser with Love mixtape. I really do dig both versions of the song, and since he's released both and an album and a music video since we've last spoken of him, I figured I'd do all of us a solid and bring him up at least one more time in one of our conversations.

Now I've already given the album a nice and easy run through, but for me that doesn't constitute as a full listen so I can't speak too much about it. What I can say is that this album most definitely expresses a different side of musical production quite unlike what was seen on Causers of This. He seems to breaking away from that "chillwave" label that he's often attributed to and well, quite frankly I don't seem to mind that much. From what I was paying attention to, I love it, and if anybody'll be in Houston on the 14th, please don't hesitate to join me for a dance at the show, YOUR BOY WILL DEFINITELY BE GETTING IT IN.

Four Words: Tattoos and Bonsai trees

And that pretty much sums up my weekend. As usual, I didn't want to tell you until the deed was completed, but I've finally got my trumpet tattoo. I know, I know, I've never spoken about my ink and all that but....surprise? I went into the shop just over two weeks ago, in hopes that he'd be able to pencil me in and tattoo me that day. It was two days before my birthday and I really wanted it done, but of course there was other business to attend to, fortunately dude was really nice and the pricing was decent so I figured I'd make an appointment and come in the next time I was able to. Long story short, your boy got inked up and as it turns out, I'm really happy with it.

I know some people tend to frown upon tattoos and some of the things that the represent, but honestly [and obviously] I like them. I want to be old and wrinkled, I want to have cool stories to tell to my grand kids, I want to have visual representation of my former youth and lifestyle. For me, part of it's nostalgia. God forbid I lose my memory when I'm old and senial, I think it'd just be nice to have something permanently etched onto my body to signify who I am, or at least who I used to be. And honestly, mom, America, I don't do drugs, no one's pregnant, I can't steal because I'd feel too bad, and I've never been to jail. Please just let me have my moment. And if it's any consolation I have a six month rule. That panther eagle holding an American flag suggested to you by the douche bag behind the desk of an overcrowded tattoo parlor might seem like a cool idea at the moment, but as with most tattoo ideas, it was just a fleeting though that never should of been committed to in the first place. Just give it some time, we can wait.

11 years and counting.

My 18th birthday. Every other black kid I know gets Jesus hands or a really cheesy chest piece. I got a robot screaming the nickname that I gave myself. Story of my life.

You might not remember, but over the summer I contemplated beginning a bonsai tree. Unfortunately I was never able to get that idea out of the talking stages so the whole thing sort of went into a dormant stage for a while. Lo and behold, nine months later, I visit my aunt's house and there it is, a ten year old juniper bonsai tree, mine for the taking. THANK YOU BASED GOD.

And now my windowsill garden is complete.

Before you say anything, PEEP THAT SWEET MUSTACHE. It wasn't too long ago where I was making fun of any and everyone who decided to craft a stache that looked like such, but after some soul searching I realized that my dislike for the hipster handlebar was actually rooted in jealousy, not disgust. I am envious of his facial hair, and I think I'm man enough to admit.

To tie that in to our topic of discussion, Nonnative has actually chosen to embrace the hipster stache in their spring/summer 2011 lookbook. There are a lot of staple pieces in the collection, which is always a plus considering how much I care for things that'll last me forever. Most of the looks were a bit too much for my taste [I only seemed to favor six], but of course we're all picky when it comes to things that we like. Exactly, Valentine's Day. As of right now I don't particularly know how I feel about finally becoming an age that no longer has the suffix "teen" attached to it, but all I know is that I'm getting older and there's nothing I can really do about it. I don't skip school so I'll definitely be in class and since I don't have a thin young shawty to cook me dinner I'll probably just dim the lights, tell my roommate to leave, and watch Love and Other Drugs again until I cry myself to sleep. DEFINITELY not one of the best ways for one to spend their day but hey, it's a plan and I'm sticking to it. Then again, single chicks start to get lonely around the holidays so who knows, I might just end up with that baked chicken and macaroni after all. I guess we'll just wait and see how things pan out.

BREAKING NEWS: MY MY BEAUTIFUL DARK TWISTED FANTASY VINYL IS FINALLY HERE LIVE AND IN THE FLESH. I pre-ordered it a little over a month ago and was this close from canceling the order and getting a portable hard drive instead, luckily enough I decided against it. I wanted to tell you guys the moment I pressed "pay now" back in December but I prefer to have tangible evidence before I go off spilling the beans. Before I thought I had a pretty decent vinyl collection, and, well now....there are no competitors. My steez is now officially incomparable [or so I say].

I used to make myself think that I actually cared about fashion week, and Paris, and runways and all a that jazz. As it turns out, I actually don't seem to care that much. Now I'm not saying that I don't find it awesome or that the people who actually do are label snobs and fashion whores, #IMJUSTSAYING that I don't mind being just a regular ol' oustider looking in, who at the end of the day still has 2 novels to read, 4 poems to analyze, and an essay due on Tuesday. My hands are kind of full with this whole English thing at the moment. Now what I do love are the regular people who go there. I guess we could say that the definition of "regular" is fairly subjective, but I think you know where I'm trying to go with this. I suppose I just find it very interesting to see what people with money [or just excellent taste and know how] can do with an outfit. I know this is going to be a bit cliche for me to say, but I find it all somewhat....inspirational?

Theophilus London remixes The XX who remixes Florence & The Machine who actually remixed it from someone else but it's not really that important so we'll just leave that bit of information out of it. I'm not exactly the biggest fan of Florence [she is a hottie though], or The XX for that matter, but I'm pretty much ride or die for almost anything Theo does so of course I had to bring this to your attention eventually. I loved Theophilus' verse over the remix and I was actually pretty surprised by how much I was into The XX's rendition as well. I don't know if you recall but I actually went to the London show that he did in Houston. What, you say don't remember? No worries, I've got your memory refreshment right....NOW.

Like for real, legit flowers. Now the average guy probably would a just kept it moving towards the dollar condom/chapstick isle, but I think we all know that my brain operates on a slightly different level than most. I used to think that I was a 9 year old boy on the inside, but then I realized that I'm actually a 74 year old former author who moved to the country when his wife died and kids stopped calling. His wife passed away a few years back, and she told him that the only thing she wanted to do before she died was to continue to love her husband and to move into a small cottage and own a garden. Unfortunately she died before she could continue with step two, so the fictional me had to go on and do it for her. As you can see I spend a LOT of time thinking about my life and alternate time lines wondering how it's all gonna come together. I pretty much live in my head, what can I say.

As it turns out, I'm actually pretty comfortable being a straight black male who owns a decorative floral arrangement on his windowsill. I figured I can get away with it considering that I'm an English major, and that I have a vinyl record collection, and most importantly because I have a steez that makes all the ladies go, "DAMMMMMM HOW HE DO THAT?" It's also probably the big goofy prescriptions lenses, or the fact that my birthday falls on Valentine's Day, but I think you get the point. As of now there's no specific lady friend that I call my own at the moment, and because my date of birth just so happens to be on the day of love it makes things kind of awkward. I've never really been down about rolling solo dolo on my birthday, but this year seems different, I guess it must be the whole college thing. I'm considering pulling a Kanye and going to a strip club and turning a whore into an ever famous housewife [no insults intended] but I don't think I quite have the funds for all a that just yet. No worries though, we've still got time, my head will forever be up.

Rather than be a hater and try and find faults in this fella's demeanor, I'm just going to take the alternate route and admit it: I'M JEALOUS. I know it's all just a montage and that this really isn't his house, but that doesn't take away from the fact that he has the voice of a Spanish angel, a dime piece for a lady friend

We've Got Some Difficult Days Ahead

It wasn't until fairly recently that I've begun regretting never paying attention to those Martin Luther King Day assignments we had to do back in grade school. I hate to sound so uneducated, but if it wasn't for him [tears forming] I wouldn't be able to have all these cool white friends, or this awesome taste in music, or to be able to take my dates to Applebee's and receive some decent prices [there's no way they'd let me have that 2 for $20 deal].

A few days ago I accidentally deleted the folder on my laptop that contained almost all of my movies and music. Just yesterday, after spending countless hours trying to get it all back, I somehow deleted it all over again,and for a minute I had completely lost my mind. After a few moments of headbanging and thought collecting I realized that I really don't have it all that bad. Yeah it'll take me weeks to get my music back and I have no clue how to prevent this from happening again, but at least I can date
Mr.[average white father of suburban means] daughter without being arrested on account of suspicion [THAT'S NOT MY BABY, I DIDN'T KNOW SHE WAS PREGNANT]. For those reasons, among others, I say thank you, and that I promise to make my kids pay attention when it comes time to write that essay, we've all got to learn somehow.

I Just Want to be Perfect

Three words: dumb heavy awesome. I have to say, I saw it and it was EPIC, definitely worth all the hype that FARRUYA made it out to be. To be honest, I knew that it was going to end up being as good as it was and it actually ended up being better than I originally though. As of late I've been pretty hard on acting, camera angles and cinematography, and after casually reviewing the whole film I've got to admit it was all done way to well. The plot was simple and very well executed, and the underlying theme was just....just so....dope, and that's all I'll say for that matter. I have to stop myself now because then I'll just wind up going on and on, seeming like quite the douche since all they teach you in upper level literature classes is how to over analyze everything. I'm not metacritic or rottentomatoes so I'll leave the details to the imagination and tell you to just go see the film, Black Swan is the title [as if you didn't know].

It's probably almost an insult to speak about these two movies in the same post but who cares, we can do that. Because you're afraid to sleep after watching Black Swan, I'd suggest Dinner for Schmucks for a decent laugh. You probably won't remember it for the rest of your life, and I'm probably speaking objectively considering that I get all gay for a Paul Rudd feature [no homo], but hey, we like what we like. I kind of just posted this last bit because I liked the song so much but still, you get the point.

Do You Know Who Your Real Friends Are?

As you can tell by my absence, the winter break has been oh so good to me. Christiana and I banded together and decided to drive up to Killen to surprise Emil and the clique for New Years. We spent a good portion of the time watching Locked Up [or if you're 12 like we are, Licked Up] Raw and eating only the worst of foods, but when it was time to go out and rage we did so like it was was the last big party of the year [well technically it was]. We drove up to Austin to pick up ER from the the airport and even spent a few hours rippin up the town just to let everyone there know that we're cooler than them [valiant effort]. We were even going to get neck tattoos, I San FranKILLsco, and Emil KILLa K, but we decided that literature professors should have at least some degree of professionalism.

The rager was pretty decent and we all had a good time, I even made out with a country singer, I think her name was Taylor Swift or something or the other....Ok, it was really just a girl who vaguely resembled Taylor Swift and we didn't exactly make out but if you're ever talking about me to someone who's unfamiliar just do me a solid and say I did all right? Preciate it. We took stupid amounts of photos so to make up for my lack of post these last few days I decided to expose a good number of the them to highlight the experience. Dudes probably aren't suppose to say this but I can promise you that there is absolutely no shame in my game: I LOVE MY FRIENDS.

I tell you this because it is exactly what I'm attempting to do. Luckily enough, I'm not in high school so I still have another two weeks [as well as the rest of this one] before I have to head back up to the university and continue the learning process. Christmas was great, and because my mother still likes me, she continues to buy and wrap presents as if I'm still a 12 year old
[jokes on you, I'm 7 on the inside]. For the past few days I've been spending all my damn money away like it's no tomorrow, but you know what, I need to treat myself every now and again, it's the holidays, more on that later though. If I'm lucky I won't have to work this weekend and I'll be spending the New Year's with Emil and Christiana in Austin TX, but if not, Kia, tell Phylica and Rohelio to buy another pack a chicken breast cause I'm coming over for dinner.

Christmas in Harlem

I don't know why I'm getting excited about moving into an apartment considering that I still have another year and a half to stay on campus, but I guess it's never too early to start getting ready for real life. I also decided that it's time to start learning how to cook for real, so I now officially proclaim myself as an at home chef in training. I got myself a notebook and everything, and I'm writing down any and every recipe that I consider worthy of my noting. IT'S OFFICIAL.

Winter break is going good, and I'm happy to be away from the campus for a little while. COLLEGE IS A DRAG. Speaking of winters, Christmas is right around the corner so I should probably go start wrapping some gifts. Hold up, am I even done shopping yet? WHY AM I POSTING THIS SO OFF SCHEDULE? Shouts to STEPHK for blunting the creative process. Got a love them cyber distractions though.

It's called a high rise pancake/German pancake/it's-not-really-a-pancake-but-it's-good-as-hell-though. All you need:

1 1/2 tablespoons butter
1 beaten egg
1/4 cup milk
1/4 cup flour
a few pinches of sugar, salt and nutmeg if you've got it
[less salt more sugar].

preheat the oven to 425 and let the butter melt in an ovenproof skillet. Once melted, remove and add all the other previously mentioned ingredients [whisk them together before hand]. Return it to the oven and let that b***h bake until golden brown. Remove and serve immediately with a sprinkle of powdered sugar and a bit of lemon juice, or if you're me, scratch the lemon and go with honey instead. It's really easy and it makes you look like a boss, so go for it. HAPPY HOLIDAYS.

Toro y Moi

A few weeks ago one of my homegirls made me a mixtape and by doing so, opened up the gates of heaven and officially introduced me to the music of Toro y Moi [as well as a few others]. I've actually heard bits and pieces of his music over the course of the last few years, but for some odd reason I've never actually given him a chance, maybe I just wasn't ready.

Besides Cudi and Yeezy, lately I've been on a lo-fi/chillwave kick that keeps me craving things that I've never really heard before. Almost immediately after hearing his song I downloaded his album and was so happy that I actually decided to do so. His latest stuff seems to be breaking away from that strictly chillwave persona, and even as a new fan I'm actually pretty excited about that. If you haven't done so already, I highly recommend you picking of Causers of This and to also be on the lookout for the new album coming up sometime this February. ALSO, I'm jealous of both his afro and his ability to pull off those dope ass clear frames without coming off like a total douche bag. Playa's got it goin on.

WOW, so I'm glad that's over. I think I did pretty well, and I'm pretty sure I'll be able to walk away with 3 A's and some B's, so all in all it was a fairly decent semester. Besides reading The Great Gatsby and the chicks and dicks sleepover with Emil, Christiana and the fam, I don't think I have too much planned for the holiday break. We'll see how it all pans out. Anyways, you remember that folder I told you about with all the cool gifs, images and such? Well I also have a folder saved with some of my favorite facebook moments. What can I say, I'm a bit on the nostalgic side.

Pendleton x Opening Ceremony

It's been a while since I've done a lookbook hasn't it? I guess I just get too wrapped up in my own life that I don't really think about everything else that's going on sometimes. Finals are coming up soon so I'm attempting to step my game up and get my priorities in order. Speaking of, wasn't I suppose to do something about Cudi, AND YEEZY? But back to what you're here for. Ever since their spring/summer collection of this year, I've become a pretty legit fan of Pendleton x Opening Ceremony. I love how they're able to play with colors and fabrics and churn out outfits that are still quite wearable [sometimes, not all the time]. I don't mean to be a douche, but they could of fixed that before he stepped in front of the camera. So Theophilus London came to Houston this past weekend. When I tell you that there was no reason for me to be as excited as I was to see another man perform on stage, I say that with complete honesty [but I don't care]. I can't lie though, I WAS PRETTY GAY FOR THEOPHILUS THAT NIGHT. There were some hotties in there too, but on this particular evening I wasn't really out looking for them. That's understandable though right? God I hope so.

If you're beginning to question my enthusiasm for another man's art form then chances are you're not too familiar with Theophilus' music. The best piece of advice I have ever gotten from GQ ever. Some time ago they did an article on eyeglass frames, and as a man of limited sight I had to give it a read. Five Day Weekend

If it weren't for the Native Americans losing nearly all of their land to acre hungry settlers, then we wouldn't be able to enjoy this wonderful holiday we call Thanksgiving. I guess every minority group has something to blame white people on. STORY OF OUR LIVES [just kidding, but really though]. I can honestly say that I ate WAY more than I really needed to, and even though these abs still tighten up like they're suppose to, I feel like I'm going to have to put in work/throw up a few times just to get em back to the 6 pack of it's heyday. OH LORD.

Meal one, 9:00. Start it off like a soldier.

Meal two, 2:00. After doing some community service I was ready to get the ball rolling. HARDCORE.

Snack time, 2:10. I PLAY NO GAMES.

Meal three, 6:00. Once I arise from the nap, it's time to switch up the scenery and go in for round three.

I did go out for Black Friday though. You would think on one of the biggest holiday sales of the year, one would come back with much more stuff, but coincidentally I'm both cheap and picky, and I guess I'll be the first to admit it. I did however walk off with a few albums to add to my very humble vinyl collection so I guess I did okay right?

I remember doing a post on this brand specifically quite some time ago, and I'll probably continue to do so as long as they continue to craft shoes that are always this legit. As it turns out, each shoe is hand made by a number of 25 artisans with locally sourced materials from a workshop in Guatemala. Here's the kicker though: IT'S ALL SWEAT-SHOP FREE. I know, crazy right? To think that there are are still people out there who know how to create profitable business AND provide respectable work environments. For a second there I thought it was impossible to combine the two.

I've been a fan of the designs since day one but my only issue is that most and nearly all of the shoes look way too feminine. Now this may just be me but we like what we like right? Now I'm most fond of 2 and 6, but if I'm felling a bit funky then I'd might want to whip out 4 and 8 on my show off days.

Where is my Phylicia Rashad?

I'm just going to go ahead and say it: Phylicia Rashad is one of the most beautiful women in the enitre world. HANDS DOWN. You might be reading this thinking that this is just a joke, nostalgia's purposes or something of that nature, but I am completely serious in the statement that I have expressed above. Every time I see her there's like a little ray of light that shines from deep down in my soul, giving me hope that one day I'm going to bag me a women who is at least remotely similar to her in either looks, and or characteristics.

It's quite rare that I ever call a girl beautiful and there's a reason for that. For me that's a word you have to earn over time, you don't just get that because you're a hottie and you're speaking to me. Yeah, that model with the good weave and the tight dress is fun to look at, but at the end of this function I'm going home to eat a poptart and watch King of Queens reruns. Are they ready for that just yet? Probably not [Claire Huxtable would be]. "Beautiful" accounts for everything, not just looks. Now by no means am I saying that I'm out looking for THE ONE so I can shack up and produce one to two intelligent yet socially conscious, artistic children, but hey, if she's anything like Phylicia then I'd be a F*%&!#G idiot to let that one get away.

Sleigh Bells, one duo that I officially have to see live before I kick the can. The moment I listened to their obnoxiously loud noise pop records, I knew from that very moment that this band was going to be one that I would be VERY interested in. If I was forced to put their sound into words I would probably go ahead and describe it as a mixture of hip hop drums and bass, hardcore guitar riffs, all smashed together with the voice of a high pitched 80's pop group singer. WHAT A TERRIFIC COMBINATION. I've had the album sitting on my ear drums for just over a half a year now, and even still, whenever it's time to get hyped up, Sleigh Bells is my go to album.

My neighbors next door decided that they want to be in the running for America's next rap star, so they figured that the only way they can make it is to make mixtapes all day. Now when I'm trying to get a study sesh in, the yelling can can get quit annoying so if you too have similar problems, plug up your ipod dock, direct it towards the mutual wall, and blast The Bells till your hearts content. Why the south is still continuing to produce rappers, the world will never know.

Unfortunately, I don't have too many folk up at the university that I can really call my friends.Of course there are a number of associates and even a few people that I can say are more than that, but that numbers been pretty stagnant for quite some time now. Whenever I get the opportunity to see all the kids that I truly miss, it's like....it's like....IT'S JUST THE BEST DAY EVER. Emil and the lady invited me up for a weekend to visit in D town Denton so of course I had to get my ace up there. I had a good time, and I think I needed that. I don't mind being a lone wolf but every now and again I think it's all right to find my way back to the pack. Sometimes it's just better that way. OWWWWW.

200 Followers and Counting

So can I quit at life now? I'd rather not continue on, I wouldn't mind dying on a good note. I started JSTNRMN just over a year ago and in all seriousness I still remember my first post like it was yesterday. It was a Friday afternoon and I was sitting in my dorm room with nothing to do. I had no clue how to work with html
[still don't] and I can't remember exactly why I chose to start a blog but I decided to, and look at me now....FLOURISHING. My very first follower was of course my bff no homo Emilio, and since then I've been able to grasp the attention of just enough people to keep me interested, allowing for me to keep this blog up and running day in and day out.
Over the past 16 months not only have I gained boundless knowledge of music, fashion, art, and a number of other useless categories that make me seem that much cooler when conversing with strangers, but most importantly a pseudo family that keeps me from ever wanting to delete this blog due to boredom or weariness. Even now, I still feel a rush of excitement every time I get a comment on a post, especially ones referring to my writing style or my taste in [insert category here] or my excellent bone structure, also know as: you are SO cute ;) [just kidding, but really though]. Mutual Discrepancy

This video's just about a year old but every time I watch it it feel like it's the first time [#STREETARTCRUSH]. I love these guys and this video because of the fact that the both of them are on two totally different wavelengths but are able to come together and go beast mode all over this mural space. I have no idea why I didn't post this nine months ago considering that I found it about a week after it released, but I guess the good stuff is worth waiting for in some cases. Boredom Kills but There's a Plus Side

I end up making cool little videos to store in my memory bank like the one below.One a my classes ended up letting us out early so there was about a two hour gap between this one and the next. I THINK I SHOULD FIND SOME MORE FRIENDS.

Side note, I finally got my driving permit, so if you don't hear from me in a few weeks then you know what happened. I know what you're thinking, WAY TO OLD, but I think we all have to start somewhere.

Side note's side note, I've almost got 200 followers, YAYY. In truth this was my initial goal from the very beginning, so to see that you [and I] are still very interested in this blog is quite exciting. When the day comes I'll have to do a very special appreciation post, but today I bring you one that is almost completely aimless. Oh well.

Phoenix Turned to Stone

Well of course I watched Runaway silly, how could I not. Truth be told I wanted to post this earlier just to make sure that everything was still fresh in our minds, but I wanted to watch the film/epic music video at least one more time before I decided to express my opinions. Well I did, so....

All in all, I think that the film was done in a very beautiful manner. The cinematography was, as expected, top notch, the audio tracks were most wonderful, the ballet was eye catching, Kanye was Kanye, and our lead Selita Ebanks was quite fetching to the eye
[OH YOU KNOW]. At first I seemed to have a problem with the acting [little that there was], thinking that well, they couldn't act. Watching it again, I noticed that it was more of an art house, minimalistic vibe goin on, so for the benefit of the doubt I'll just say that the dry dialogue was meant to be dry on purpose.

The wardrobe choices were just too legit. Every time I see Kanye
[on and off the stage] he makes me feel like I need two things: gold chains and chest hair. I don't know what it is with this guy, but he's just bleeding cool--ALWAYS. Everything was just done so well, I really enjoyed....except for those wings though. It was a little too obvious that someone was pulling the strings up above when they were fully extended, and the green screen action was just a little too green screeney, but that doesn't really affect how much I enjoyed the video. Simply put the film was awesome, and if this is what new Kanye has to offer then I don't think I'm going to object to him sticking around. Stay up Yeezy.

Deadbeat Summer

So you and I are friends right? AT LEAST I THOUGHT WE WERE. There is no reason for any of you to not of informed me of Neon Indian [real talk]. You know I love a good band, why was I left out of the loop? I thought we had a relationship--now I feel as if you've broken that bond of trust we ~~have~~ had. Anyway, I think I might of fallen in love. Every time I find myself a new artist
[this goes for all genres] I do some heavy thinking, pacing back and forth in my head trying to see if my lust for them is legitimate or if it's just another passing moment that soon subsides. The latter isn't the case....I think what we have might just be real.

And as for YOU guys, I think you've got some making up to do. If you ever feel like you wanna put me on an artist, please don't be shy, I likes the good music.

OOPS, I forgot to tell you. I decided that I liked Neon Indian so much that I wanted to make my own unofficial music video slash blog promotion dance flick. I've been told that my moves are a mix between a 14 year old white kid and a 60 year old black man. Hey, at least it's my own.

Bow Tie Fever

So I finally broke down and bought one....I'm excited. We all know that I'm an Ebay hound, and I can get pretty relentless when I'm gunning for what I want. Luckily enough I didn't have to work too hard for this one, dude had a bunch. It was about 9 bucks total if I recall correctly, and beside that unsightly sow line I'm pretty happy with it. Unfortunately, I don't really have anywhere to go that requires me to get all fancy, and if I wear it to school I'll probably feel like a koi fish in a pond filled with tilapia, but who knows, I'll probably be breaking it out sometime soon.

The first two are of me and the others are just cool photos that I thought'd be good to fill out your time here. No lie, I stood in the mirror for at least an hour and a half trying to tie this thing but I want you to know that I did it all for your viewing pleasure. #HOLLABACK

Sperry x Band of Outsiders

I know, more things I can't afford [but I do continue to dream]. If there's one thing that I do love about Sperry x Band of Outsiders [except the price] is that they don't exist in super limited quantities that are only sold on some obscure Japanese website that requires you to list your entire lineage before they allow you to buy the shoe. ALL the shoes are sold right on the Sperry website, allowing anyone who can afford that 200+ price tag to buy at their heart's content. A few of the pieces seem a bit too trendy or maybe even a bit too much for someone to actually be able to wear, but the only reason I say this is probably because I wouldn't be able to pull it off but hey, I'm speaking frankly.

The fall collection is actually pretty neat too, with a lot of your staple items that if taken care of, could last you a lifetime. They've been on this Polaroid kick lately so of course the lookbook was shot in similar fashion to its previous collections. There's also a nice little video for Scott Sternberg [head of the pack] at the end of all this so make sure you check that out too. You're already here aren't you?

Remix Remix Three

THE DUBSTEP EDITION. I know it's probably not okay for one man to be so into another man's music but you know what, "f**k that," Kid Cudi is one of my favorite artist of all time [sorry yeezy] and I am no longer afraid to say it
[I never really was]. I know he's still quite young music wise, but when someone comes along and is able to sing-rap everything that you've been feeling inside then you just can't help but to follow along in every move that they make in their career. To think that I had the opportunity to see him live for 15 bucks only a year and a half ago sickens me, so I guess I'll just have to catch him on the next one. The album is set to release on November 9th so make sure you keep your eyes peeled for that one. Toast to you Cudi.

Like Father Like Son

I'm not even gonna lie, I can't wait to have kids. As a 19 year old alpha male, I probably shouldn't say things like that because in truth I'm really not trying to any time soon, but really--I can't wait [I think you understand]. I think my want of an offspring has less to do with spreading my seed and more so with having a connection with someone who looks up to me to teach them everything they need to know in life. I don't know about you guys, but there are few times where I've had someone actually listen to me just because I was me. Not because they knew I could get them an A on their essay, or because the only way I'll ever shut up is if they let me finish my story, but just because it was me, and they were there, and we were together. It's a great feeling knowing someone loves to hear you ramble on just because they love the way your ramble. It'll be like having the ultimate protégé except this one last forever.  

AH WELL, none of this matters though because chicks are, how do you say in twitter, #CONFUSING. You think you know them, and then you don't. You think things are going okay and then you take a second look and realize she's not all over you like you had originally hoped she was. Such is life I suppose. No worries though, I think I have two more lives left so I'll just slip in this quarter and go for the win while I've still got a chance. Game's not over yet.

Now why is this all relevant? Well, one a my favorite brands [Fred Perry] finally got around to adding a kids line to their collection. When I saw it this got me thinking about my life and kids and all that biznazz, so I figured I'd just share my thoughts since this is one of the few outlets that I actually have. Now I don't know how I'm going to afford it considering that a bottom dollar prostitute can walk off with more money annually than any high school teacher I know, but if daddy has a cardigan then so shall son.

The Drums + The Young Friends

Last week, this day, the homie and I decide to go see a few of my favorite bands. I know, I know, they're still fairly new but I think I'm just gonna take one for the team and add them to my favorites list anyway. I took a boat load of photographs so when you're done with this you can avert your attention downwards to my brand new Flickr link [playa's stepping his game up].
The show was great and I think I'll just go ahead and say that I had the most fun there. I'll be honest, I don't know what's wrong with these hipsters but they all just stood there. As one of the 3 black guys there, I probably shouldn't of drawn so much attention to myself, but when you're always the minority you realize that life's already hard enough, why stress over what everyone else thinks. There were a few other small groups who got it in but I think they were rollin on X and that kind a creeped me out a bit. All in all, it was a good one for sure.

OH S**T DOUBLE POST. Fonzworth Bentley and Marc Williams [motivational speaker] came to our school and spoke to us on how to be a gentleman and things of that nature. Honestly, I didn't think it was going to be as good as it was so I was quite surprised when it was all over. When I went up to ask my question I candidly passed along my leisure card to the both of them so as you would expect I was super excited. I put the photos in polaroid form because EVERYTHING just looks so much cooler that way. I should have the real ones on Flickr pretty soon so don't fret. And did you see the outfit? I didn't know they made double vented tweed suits, and those velvet slippers are just A ONE. They're cool people, I enjoyed.

Business Cards with no Business?

That's why I call them leisure cards. I put the order in almost a month ago and I was REALLY excited to tell you guys but I just decided to keep it a secret until I had them in the flesh. I wanted to call them pleasure cards [opposite of business] but I was promptly informed that that may be insinuating a service that I'm not exactly attempting to offer [OR AM I]. Either way, it's a clever way of introducing myself [and my blog] without looking like a total creep.
I can't remember if I've ever told you guys what I want to do with my life but my main goal is to be a high school English teacher and eventually a professor. I know, I know, it's a tough job but somebody's got to do it. I'd love to write music or maybe even fashion articles on the side but that'd be just for fun and or petty cash. I've been a pretty moderate trumpet player for about 11 years, and I've got included in my resume, three, count em three ska bands, so who knows what might happen. I've also been throwing around the idea of a screenplay but I'll keep that completely under wraps until I figure out how exactly I want to go about that. I may not have a business for my business cards for now, but who knows what might happen in the future.

Cool People Cool Places

So fashion week is finally over. You might be thinking, "well hey you're a cool guy, you know stuff, why don't you ever talk about the fashion shows and all the new collections that are coming out right now?" To that I'd say, "well thank you for the compliment, but I just don't seem to care all that much." I don't live in 2011 yet so I think I'd much rather just talk about things that are a little more relatable like I don't know, the present? Plus, have you ever tried to see into the future? It's not that much fun, you just sit on the floor with your legs crossed for fours hours waiting to see what your baby's momma's gonna look like. I don't mean to spoil the surprise but nothing ever really happens.

I declare all that to say that I live in fall 2010 now, we can discuss spring 2011 when the time comes if that's okay with you. But anyways, I love to look at all the people that go there. Especially the old guys, it gives me something to look forward to. There were so many pictures to choose from in the lady department [sexy], but all the dudes were looking a little too feminine for me so of course I had to be choosy. Here's what I came up with....
